Communications internships

City of Bloomington

The Communications internship offered by the City of Bloomington provides a unique opportunity for students to learn effective government communications while honing their skills in writing for print publications and the Web, photography and graphic design.

Internships in the Communications department are offered annually in the spring, summer and fall. All internships are unpaid. The City will work with students who are attempting to fulfill requirements for academic credit.

Primary objective

To assist with a variety of communications and marketing projects that help maintain a favorable image of the City.

Essential functions

  • Assist in writing and editing the City’s bi-monthly newsletter for residents and monthly internal newsletter for employees.
  • Help produce copy for the City’s external and internal websites.
  • Conduct interviews and write script for video to air on the City’s government and public access cable television channels as well as the City’s website.
  • Assist with editing video projects in addition to studio and on-location video shoots.
  • Capture, compile and catalog digital photos.
  • Perform miscellaneous projects for the Communications Division, as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

  • Must be enrolled full-time at an accredited university, working toward a degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, English or a closely-related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software.
  • Still photography skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work independently and take direction.

Desirable qualifications

  • Previous communications experience in a government setting.
  • Experience writing newsletters.
