Engineering Services

Engineering Services starts the ball rolling on Improvement Projects (e.g. street resurfacing, curb and gutter, sidewalks, sewer and water lines, permanent drainage) and Special Assessments for Improvement Projects (the cost for improvements adjacent to your property). Staff is responsible for developing a Feasibility Study for the Improvement Projects and provides informational meetings for residents and affected property owners. Staff also requests the necessary hearings, resolutions and approvals from the City Council.

Street improvements

Engineering Services teams up with the Maintenance Division to determine the necessary streets for repair. We collect prices and estimate costs of projects. Like an assembly line, Engineering Services takes improvements through a series of informational meetings and council hearings. When council orders an improvement, a team of engineers and technicians develops the plans and specifications, procures contracts for improvements to be made and oversees construction. Engineering Services will then determine the actual amounts for the special assessments, send proper notification to affected property owners and request approvals through the City Council.

Providing and maintaining information

We maintain special assessment records for all properties in the city, as well as city maps and base maps for G.I.S (Geographic Information System). This includes lot areas and adjusted frontages for special assessment purposes. Engineering Services is in charge of permits and inspections of various work within the street right-of-ways including private utilities such as gas, telephone, electric and CATV. We are also in charge of providing information, various maps and drawings to developers and the public regarding public works projects and existing utility and street construction as-builts (final drawings of how an improvement was constructed). In addition, we maintain records of all special improvements within the city ordered for construction by the City Council (pending assessment).

Other duties

Engineering Services works with other departments in platting properties as well as maintaining copies of all plats within the city. Other duties include upgrading as-built information and maintaining records for right-of-way deeds, easements and maps as they pertain to Public Works Improvement Projects. Residential and commercial curb cuts for driveway entrances are also permitted and inspected through Engineering Services.
