Safe Routes to School
Sidewalk Improvement Project

Bloomington will construct new sidewalk to fill in gaps in the routes to three schools, to increase student safety. There will also be encouragement activities to promote walking and bicycling, and education with the Police once the sidewalks are complete.

What is the scope of this project?

Bloomington Public Schools and the City of Bloomington propose to construct 3,629 lineal feet of sidewalk to fill in the three targeted sidewalk gaps around the three schools identified that serve children from kindergarten to 8th grade. These proposed sidewalk completions will remove physical obstacles to the children walking and biking to school by providing continuous, off street routes that guide the students to what are the safest crossing locations.

How is the project funded?

The project is funded by a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Grant. The SRTS program, created by the Federal Surface Transportation Act, establishes a grant program providing communities with the opportunity to improve conditions for bicycling and walking to school. No assessments are proposed.

How were the segments selected?

City and school officials looked at what is keeping students from walking or biking to school. This was done by trying to identify any physical obstacles. By overlaying a GIS map of Bloomington's sidewalk system with the School District's walking area maps, it became obvious that some sidewalk gaps existed within the walking area of three Bloomington schools that serve K-8 students. See the table for list of schools, identified missing sidewalk segment locations and lengths.
