Reuse center

Residents may pick up free of charge items designated by the County for reuse. The County does not guarantee these products and items selected are used at their own risk. The following are available: oil-based paint, adhesives and glues, motor oil, household cleaners, latex paint, automobile products.

Materials accepted FREE of charge

Recyclable materials

  • Mixed paper, magazines, catalogs, newspaper, phone books
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Rinsed glass and plastic bottles with necks
  • Rinsed metal cans, scrap metal (bikes, grills, fencing)
  • Oil, drained oil filters, batteries, paint cans, non-empty aerosol cans and non-refillable propane/butane cylinders.

Problem materials

  • Mercury:
    Liquid mercury switches, thermostats, thermometers, barometers. Broken mercury items must be labeled and placed in sealed, glass containers.
  • Fluorescent and High Intensity Discharge Lamps (HIDS):
    Fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent, mercury vapor, high pressure sodium, metal halide. There is a limit of 25 lamps per year per household. Business waste will not be accepted. The facilities are only allowed to accept waste from households.
  • Rechargeable or Cordless Appliances:
    Small rechargeable or cordless household appliances frequently contain batteries that cannot be removed. Entire appliances will be accepted: Radios, tools, cordless telephones, radio controlled toys, hand vacuums.
  • Electronics:
    Camcorders, computers, printers, radios, stereos, tape players, televisions, telephones, VCRs.
  • Household Batteries:
    Any type of household battery: Alkaline, carbon-zinc, lithium, button, rechargeable nickel-cadmium, rechargeable lead-acid, mercury; or any size: A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-Volt, lantern-size, battery packs.

Household Hazardous Waste

For resident and County employee safety, bring household hazardous wastes in tightly sealed containers in plastic-lined boxes in your trunk to avoid spillage. Containers must be no larger than 5 gallons in size. Contents should be labeled if not in the original packaging. Never mix hazardous wastes together!

Household hazardous wastes usually can be identified by the signal words: CAUTION, POISON, CAUSTIC, DANGER, WARNING, FLAMMABLE, CORROSIVE, VOLATILE. Examples include: Alcohols, aerosols, battery acid, brake fluid, cleaning solvents, disinfectants, driveway sealers, tars, asphalt, epoxies, glues, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, insecticides, bug killers, motor oil, oil filters, oven cleaners, oil-based paints, paint strippers, poisons, pesticides, photochemicals, pool chemicals, solvent-based cements/adhesives, thinners, mineral spirits, turpentine, varnish, oil, wood finishes, wood preservatives.

NOTE

The County is not equipped to handle ammunition, infectious wastes, radioactive materials, explosives, fireworks, compressed gas cylinders. If you have these items, call the County at 612-348-3777 for information on disposal options.
