Bloomington Ice Garden's Rink One is now open for skating and hockey.

The 37-year-old rink, which seats 1,800 people, underwent a major renovation during the summer and fall of 2007. The rink reconstruction included new concrete flooring, a new energy-efficient refrigeration system, extended players' boxes and seamless glass that enhance spectator viewing.

Built with a sand floor when it was originally installed, the rink now sits on concrete, which covers multiple layers of wire mesh, piping, insulation and sand.

"With the concrete floor, we can now thaw the top layer of ice and use the space for other activities such as indoor fairs," said Bloomington Ice Garden Manager Andy Baltgalvis. "We can also put down Astroturf and use the space for soccer and lacrosse games. The possibilities are endless."
