Project updates

Mall of America Wayfinding Signage

The updates listed below refer to Mall of America Wayfinding Signage. To find updates regarding other projects, go to major road construction projects.

November 2011

November 4, 2011

The electronic signs on the freeways have been installed. Work on one existing (non-MOA) static sign remains along with other ancillary work. The sign manufacturer will commission the signs (i.e., make the final connections to MnDOT's communication system) during the week of Nov 7. Temporary lane closures will be needed sporadically through Nov 15.

October 2011

October 28, 2011

The signs on the freeways have been installed, except one located at eastbound 494 at Portland Ave. The sign at Portland will be installed during the week of Oct 31. Lane closures on EB I494 will be required and the exit ramp for EB 494 to Portland Ave will need to be temporarily closed, which will occur during off-peak hours. The sign manufacturer will commission the signs (i.e., make the final connections to MnDOT's communication system) during the week of Nov 7.

October 21, 2011

The signs on the freeways will be erected starting October 24 and be substantially complete by November 4. Lane closures on I494, TH5, and TH77 will occur to accommodate the work, mostly during the week of October 24. Some signs will have temporary static panels until the sign vendor commissions the electronics, which will occur during the week of November 7. Within two weeks after commissioning, the signs will be able to be remotely changed by MnDOT, after a request to change by the City.

September 2011

September 23, 2011

Construction on the project continues towards a mid-November completion. The Contractor has submitted a claim related to the MN State shutdown. Staff is reviewing the claim with the contractor and working with MnDOT to determine the validity of the claim since the project is not a MnDOT project, but occurs in MnDOT rights-of-way.

August 2011

August 26, 2011

Directional boring and conduit installation for the signs continued during the week of August 22. The contractor is working along TH77 to complete the infrastructure for three signs. They will then move to I494 and TH5.

August 19, 2011

Directional boring and conduit installation for the signs continued during the week of August 15. The project took advantage of the 494 closure during the weekend to install conduit on the Portland Ave bridge.

August 12, 2011

Directional boring and conduit installation for the signs continued during the week of August 8. Some work will require temporary lane closures to be installed during MNDOT-allowed times along I494, TH77, and Hwy 5.

August 5, 2011

Foundations for the new sign locations along I494 by the Minnesota River were poured during the week of August 1. Directional boring and conduit installation for the other sign locations will continue during the week of August 8. The work will require temporary lane closures to be installed during MNDOT-allowed times along I494, TH77, and Hwy 5.

July 2011

July 29, 2011

Field work along TH77, HWY 5, and I494 will continue during the week of August 1. Lead times on fiber optic cabling appear to be the critical path item for the schedule. The contractor has submitted a notice to the City that it will seek damages from the City due the MN state shutdown. The City is evaluating the claim.

July 22, 2011

Field work along TH77, HWY 5, and I494 will restart during the week of July 25 now that the state shutdown is over. Product procurement and sign manufacturing continued during the shutdown.

July 1, 2011

This majority of this project occurs within MnDOT rights-of-way, although it is a City project with no MnDOT funding. All field work on the project stopped on July 1 due to the state shutdown, which suspended the MnDOT permits needed for the project. Product procurement and sign manufacturing will continue during the shutdown, however.

June 2011

June 24, 2011

Product procurement and preliminary layout work continues for the freeway signs, associated cabinets, and related communications and power infrastructure. MnDOT issued some of the permits necessary for the project on Thursday, June 23. Given the potential state shutdown, the contractor is weighing the costs and benefits of mobilizing to the work sites since a shutdown would stop work on the project.

June 20, 2011

Product procurement and preliminary layout work continues for the freeway signs, associated cabinets, and related communications and power infrastructure. Physical construction work is unable to begin until a MnDOT permit is issued. It is now unlikely that the permit will be issued prior to July 1. If a permit is issued before July 1 and there is a state government shutdown, all work on state permitted projects will cease. This has the potential to delay this project past its original completion date.

June 7, 2011

Product procurement and preliminary layout work continues for the freeway signs, associated cabinets, and related communications and power infrastructure. Physical construction work is scheduled to start in earnest during the week of June 20, pending permit approvals. Since MnDOT is a key stakeholder in this project, provisions are being made in case the State of MN shuts down on June 30.

April 2011

April 19, 2011

The project was awarded to Global Specialty Contractors on April 18, 2011. Construction will begin mid-May.
